I didn't test Microsoft Forefront, because the last time I did one of these lab tests (about four or five years ago) it was horrendous. The false positives were enormous and detecting or cleaning real viruses was so bad I can't believe they market this crap. Symantec was so far below all the others (while also being a resource hog) that I wouldn't put it on my worst enemy's machine. Sophos was the best overall by a pretty good margin, but most of the others were all pretty close with exception of Symantec. Malwarebytes (this one took me by surprise too)

AVG (seems to have problems with Windows 7 though)ġ. Incidentally, in case you're wondering, here's the breakdown:ģ. It's unquestionably a resource hog, but with today's systems, who really notices? I used viruses I've collected over the past 15 years (about 25 of them), and Sophos is far and away the best at preventing infection. Sophos has come out on top not only in every independent test I've ever seen, I've conducted our own tests inhouse against McAfee, Symantec, CA, AVG, Malwarebytes and Kaspersky. Our parent company uses McAfee and Pointsec, so we're being forced to move from Sophos AV & SafeGuard. We're moving to McAfee because we don't have a choice.
